The area under the line on a speed-time graph is often that of a trapezium.

The area of a trapezium is always the average of its parallel sides, multiplied by the distance between them.

In this case, that's ½ (u+v) × t.

In terms of the physics, that's the average velocity multiplied by time - the displacement, of course!
