Displacement

Once around an athletics track is 400m. However, in going around once, you end up back where you started!

We measure the distance in a given direction from where you started as displacement. In the case of a 400m race, or 800m, displacement is zero, even though you have moved quite some distance.

Displacement is distance moved in a given direction.

e.g. a man walks 5 miles, south.
