So now we know how to handle brackets when multiplied. Let's look at how they can be involved with division. For example:

(x - 1) ÷ 2 = 8

Firstly, let's use that 2 by multiplying by it on boths sides:

(x - 1) = 8 × 2

Notice the brackets aren't needed now, so:

x - 1 = 16 ... x = 17

Another way of writing the same problem is with the x - 1 as the top part of a fraction, with 2 underneath:
(x - 1) / 2 = 8 ... x-1 = 8 x 2 ... x - 1 = 16
The method is the same as before - the difference is the way it's written.
